Comparing Risky Activities on a Geological Base: A Controlling Method
Track: Business GIS
Author(s): Silvia Severi, Piero La Pegna

Italian quarring industries amount to more than 4,000 companies, 30 percent of which risk exposure of workers to crystalline silica. This amount is measured by a typical insurance index: the payment of a supplementary insurance premium against silicosis. This means that many of them doesn't affect workers' health as regarding silica damaging effects. But is it true? INAIL, the Italian Workers Compensation Authority with its Technical Advisory Department for Risk Assessment and Prevention (CONTARP) is monitoring its data on risky activities using a GIS application: using a georeferred geological base, in fact, it is possible to detect anomalous situations. The method focuses its attention on comparing activities, insurance premium, and lithological characteristic of extracted material. The application of the method can produce maps in order to support priority monitoring evaluation.
