Abstract
Setting Urban Tree Canopy Goals in Washington, DC, Using ArcGIS Track: Ecology and Conservation Author(s): Holli Howard Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) goals and Forest Opportunity Spectrum (FOS) models are now being used widely throughout the Mid Atlantic region to enable cities to set tree canopy goals and facilitate regreening strategies in urban areas. Baltimore City has announced the goal of 40 percent total tree canopy by the year 2035 based on a pilot study conducting using UTC analysis. Casey Trees is working to set similar tree canopy goals for Washington, DC. The analysis is performed using high-resolution satellite imagery enabling detailed analyses of the current distribution of the urban forest. With this model, Casey Trees will develop scenarios using Esri ModelBuilder for increasing tree canopy cover as a basis for discussions with key agencies, partners and others to develop specific goal(s) for UTC restoration in the District.
