Abstract
Municipal Tree Inventory: Asset Collecting on the Cheap Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Richard Frantz In addition to a legal duty to maintain urban street trees, cities are fast realizing the value of a strong healthy urban forest. But, what's a city to do when an already tight budget is asked to now include tree maintenance? The logical first step in managing anything is to find out what you have, but if money is needed to perform critical maintenance, it is hard to justify spending it on inventorying. We will examine some of the inventory options, from hiring a seasonal forestry worker with GIS knowledge to a windshield survey with pen and paper. Pros and cons of each method will be discussed along with real world numbers and dollar amounts to actual surveys.
