Deploying ArcGIS Engine to the Mobile Workforce
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Drew Taraian, Christopher Stern

The City of Phoenix Water Services Department, the fifth largest City in the US, launched a major project to upgrade the City's mobile computing platform to a Microsoft .NET and ArcGIS Engine based mobile GIS and workforce management system. The goal of the project was to leverage the City's existing mobile computing, computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), and Esri GIS mapping investments to extend dynamic GIS content, redlining, and work order information to the City's 300+ field personnel. This paper will provide an overview of the project, technology, and implementation. The paper will illustrate the challenges and lessons learned in designing and developing an embedded ArcGIS Engine-based mobile GIS system for utility field crews, discuss system upgrade issues, device deployment, and showcase system functionality for GIS map viewing, redlining, GIS field revision management, work orders, Geodatabase and CMMS integration, and reporting.
