TreeBaltimore: Creating a Plan to Double Baltimore's Tree Canopy
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Peter Conrad

In March of 2006, Baltimore became the first city in Maryland to set an Urban Tree Canopy Goal. Baltimore City has been working with Maryland's Department of Natural Resources Forest Service and the U.S. Forest Service to study ways to increase the City's tree canopy. According to Satellite data, 20 percent of Baltimore's land is currently covered by tree canopy. The city's goal is to reach 40 percent within 30 years. The plan examines the existing tree canopy and the potential for new tree canopy using two filters that will inform the planning process - land use and land ownership. The analytic context for TreeBaltimore uses a variety of geoprocessing tools incorporating grids derived from satellite and aerial imagery. Through the use of innovative mapping techniques, statistical software and street tree sampling, we established a framework for expanding the City's tree canopy on public ROW and public and private lands.
