Spatial and Temporal Offset Analysis of Airport Runway Safety Areas
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Christopher Knouss

Geospatial concepts, analysis, and methodology can provide practical capabilities to evaluate spatially and temporally diverse, aviation data. Translation of these diverse phenomena into a relative coordinate and temporal system allows for topological assessments of otherwise distinct events in context to runway end safety areas. Coincidence of accident and incident reports from 1982 to 2005 is explored to define frequency of occurrence and relative spatial distribution. Departure overruns and crashes after departure are captured and organized at distances and locations relative to their respective runway. Use and value of ArcGIS, 3D Analyst, Spatial Analyst, Model Builder, and geodatabases are discussed.
