Abstract
Using GIS to Design, Develop, Establish, and Manage Recreational Trails Track: Environmental Management Author(s): Chris Wood, Dave Williamson In the Province of British Columbia, Canada, recreation trails are built by volunteers and have not been subject to significant planning beyond their recreational values. Increasing urban expansion is revealing that many of these trails are on private land and fear of litigation leaves land-owners and government pondering over whom will take responsibility for "risk-proofing" the liability from activities taking place on the trails. Meanwhile the formal efforts to establish new trails must meet the same constraints as any other development projects and planning is required. Cascade Environmental employs ArcInfo 9.1 to work with government, societies, and clubs to Design, Develop, Establish, and Manage recreational activities throughout British Columbia's lower-mainland and the Sea-to-Sky corridor, north of Vancouver. By first establishing a baseline inventory of trails and then identifying existing and potential environmental, ownership, and user conflicts, we have been able to provide valuable input on management strategies throughout the area.
