National Parks Vegetation Mapping Photo Interpretation & Automation
Track: Parks and Natural Reserves
Author(s): John Menke, Deborah Johnson, Edward Reyes

In California, the National Park Service (NPS) has partnered with Environmental Systems Research Institute, Aerial Information Systems, The California Native Plant Society, and NatureServe to develop detailed vegetation map products. Two of the most significant phases of the data development for these NPS vegetation maps are the photo interpretation and data automation processes. Remote sensing, through the use of large-scale stereo-pair aerial photography and high resolution on-screen imagery with ancillary topographic data, remains one of the most reliable methods today in defining vegetation at the Alliance level and finer. Aerial Information Systems, Inc., has standardized the photo interpretation and data automation methodologies in developing a comprehensive vegetation map strategy for several National Parks in California with the mapping classifications typically containing over 200 floristically unique types. This mapping is performed using standards established by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) for vegetation mapping on federal lands.
