Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Edward Liu

BattleView is Canadian Army's command and control (C2) application deployable in high-level headquarters in network centric operations. GIS is instrumental to support battle management, situation awareness and operational planning. As an important system infrastructure in BattleView, GIS enables digital mapping, symbolization, geographic data presentation and management, terrain analysis, network analysis, 3D visualization, etc. GIS technologies provide the foundation for the C2 GIS capabilities in BattleView. BattleView is designed with an embedded GIS architecture. ArcGIS Engine supports geographic data presentation and management for battle management and planning. MOLE supplies tactical data symbolization capabilities according to military symbology. ArcGIS Engine extensions supply advanced geographic data analysis. The geodatabase manages map and symbol data. Other C2 services consume GIS services through messaging and service collaboration provided in BattleView infrastructure framework. This paper presents the challenges, functionalities, the architecture and the design of BattleView from a GIS perspective.
