Abstract
Weapon Danger Zones: A GIS Tool Supporting Fixed-Winged Training Exercises Track: Defense and Intelligence Author(s): Ed Sobieranski, Daniel Levine, Don Garrison The purpose of this paper is to present the Weapons Danger Zone (WDZ) Tool developed to allow the US Air Force, US Navy, US Marine Corps, US Army, and US allies to create danger zones for fixed-winged aircraft weaponry used during training exercises. This project represents one of the first programs where a GIS application was designed from the start to meet the need of all four services. A major driver for this effort was to bring all four services into a common system that share the same methodology for generating dangers zones. This will simplify and facilitate cross-service and cross nation training opportunities allow more effective sharing of training lands. This paper will present the process used to execute the WDZ program, the challenges and solutions met during the process, the applications as it will be deployed, and the road ahead for enhancements and long term support.
