Real Time Data for Electric Transmission Utility
Track: Electric and Gas
Author(s): Liza van der Merwe

The South African government's electricity utility, Eskom Holdings Ltd. provides more than 98 percent of South Africa's electricity and generates approximately 45 percent of the electricity used on the African continent. We are integrating real-time data into the GIS for use by the Transmission Division in Eskom. Active fire and lightning locations are tracked along with forecasted weather for assessing the risk to network performance in the national control room against strategic corridors. This information is also made available through the intranet to operational staff as well as decision makers. This paper will note the lessons learnt from the experience, the optimal architecture identified to achieve this information integration and dissemination, and the way in which the different information needs were met for the various role players around the organisation. Software under consideration include Tracking Server, ArcSDE, ArcIMS, ArcGIS Server, and ArcEngine.
