Working in Floodplains? A Sustainable Office Park Redesign with GIS
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs
Author(s): Md Mahbubur Meenar

Based on the inevitable use of GIS in designing sustainable communities, this paper will focus on an interdisciplinary initiative taken at Temple University for performing a GIS-based analysis of an existing office park and proposing sustainable re-design strategies. The office park, located in southeastern Pennsylvania, is one of the first office parks in suburban Philadelphia with employment of 14,000 and an area of 13 square miles. Significant flooding and transportation problems with the help of excessive parking lots and buried stream segments have seriously hampered the economic development of the park. Unless these problems are addressed and ameliorated, wise development of the office park will continue to languish. This paper will illustrate the procedures the research team has initiated to handle sustainable development issues, showcase the application of advance 3d GIS in envisioning the future, and explain the methodology that might be applicable in other places.
