IGI&S Enterprise GIS Infrastructure: Lessons Learned
Track: New Technology and System Integration
Author(s): Robert Carlos

The goal of the Office of Chief of Staff for Installation Management (OACSIM), Army Installation Geospatial Information and Services (IGI&S) Program is to effectively collect, house, and distribute disparate installation management geospatial data for its customer, the U.S. Army. The challenge is to deliver disparate data in an un-classified multi-layered secure network environment via the "Army Mapper." How do you integrate 15 to 20 terabytes of data utilizing ArcIMS, ArcSDE, ArcGIS Server, Oracle 10g, and software development technologies with security protocols that utilize SSL, AKO/SSO PKI Certificates, and Web portal access points to facilitate an efficient and effective distribution of GIS data? This paper presents the technical lessons learned in building an Army Enterprise GIS to fulfill both thin and thick client customers with terabytes of data in various formats. The IGI&S program is utilizing these integrated GIS technologies to help Installation Management Agency better manage and operate installations around the world.
