Abstract
Bring Them Back Home Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Mike Miller, David Hansen On August 29, 2005, the face of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, was forever changed by one of the most destructive natural disasters in American history. An estimated 70,000 housing units were lost from the three coastal counties. The City of Gulfport, the central city of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, was not spared from the devastation. Rebuilding and development of homes by individual property owners, volunteer/non-profit organizations and commercial developers has become a primary concern in the years following Hurricane Katrina. The role the Division of GIS at the City of Gulfport has changed, turning outward to provide support to those who would rebuild the city and bring our friends and family back home.
