Abstract
Developing a Logistical Model for Health Care Workers in Haiti's Rural Central Plateau Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs Author(s): Michael Lloyd Laas, Michael Carcaise, Marialuisa Villanueva Project Medishare is a Miami-based 501(c)3 organization dedicated to establishing health care infrastructure in and around Thomonde. Thomonde is a village located in the Central Plateau of Haiti--the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. The Central Plateau is the most resource-poor region in Haiti; it is rural, mountainous, and it lacks navigable roads and basic infrastructure. Project Medishare delivers much of their health-care by employing Haitians native to the region. Each community health worker is responsible for overseeing the care of approximately 1,000 inhabitants. There are approximately 40,000 inhabitants throughout Project Medishare's catchment area. The project will synthesize census, health, and geographic data in GIS, with the goal of developing a logistical decision model for the deployment of community health workers throughout the field. As the community health worker model is replicated by NGOs and Health Ministries around the world, the methodology of our study becomes more valuable than the results.
