Abstract
Participatory Mapping for the Grenadines Marine Space-use Information System (MarSIS) Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs Author(s): Kimberly Baldwin Marine-based activities are the foundation of the economies of the transboundary Grenadines island chain stretching between Grenada and St.Vincent. Understanding of the abundance and distribution of key marine resources and marine space-use is critical to sustainable resource utilization and management. Participatory mapping was pivotal in developing an integrated marine resource space-use information system (MarSIS). A variety of participatory mapping methods were employed to highlight priority spaces for management including: critical habitats; areas of high aesthetic/cultural importance; areas important for livelihoods: including fishing and tourism; as well as areas of space use conflict. This paper summarises methods used and lessons learned during the participatory mapping of marine resources and space-use profiles for resource users. By involving a diversity of stakeholders through a range of participatory mechanisms throughout the development of MarSIS, the aim is to strengthen stakeholder capacity for more successful integrated management among government, NGOs, and communities of the Grenadines.
