Physical Environmental Elements of Texas American Viticultural Areas (AVA)
Track: Agriculture
Author(s): Ryan Rudnicki

Wine grape growing is subject to physical environmental constraints involving weather, climate, geology, and soils. Our Web-based application (http://spatialdata.utsa.edu/website/avatxtpg/txavas/txavas.htm) lets potential wine grape growers assess key environmental conditions/constraints at the AVA level. For each of the eight AVAs twelve spatial variables are map layers that can be turned on or off in any combination to see distributions and relationships in any part of the AVA. In addition, a representative climograph is included for each AVA which enables the potential grape grower to see the monthly average rainfall and temperature. Only preliminary environmental assessment is available on the Web site. After selecting an individual site within an AVA, more detailed visual analytical tools are needed. Some of these analytical tools are presented for one sample site within each AVA. While our Web site provides a reconnaisance of each AVA's physical environment, it unfortunately can't predict the taste of the finished product.
