Mapping Floodplains for the City of Petaluma Using XP-SWMM
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Kurt Baron, Dave Smith

This paper presents some of the challenges in producing spatial representations from non-spatial hydraulic model output. XP-SWMM is a dynamic unsteady flow model. It estimates water surface elevations based on channel geometries between locations called nodes. These nodes are connected by links between upstream and downstream nodes, between adjacent reaches, and between storage nodes and reach nodes. The output to the model is in the form of non-spatial tables. GIS was used to bring a spatial component into the hydraulic analysis. ArcGIS was used extensively for this project in the City of Petaluma to support a calibrated XP-SWMM analysis, for determining channel geometry, estimating volumes of storage nodes, and in an iterative approach to mapping floodplains based on XP-SWMM results. Model Builder greatly simplified and accelerated the production of approximately 30 different floodplains during the project.
