Abstract
Promoting Geospatial Technology at North Carolina Central University Track: Education Author(s): Rakesh Malhotra, Gordana Vlahovic, Mike Renslow, Albert Barnett, Jasper Harris The Environmental, Earth and Geospatial Sciences Department at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is establishing a GIS Research, Innovative Teaching, and Service (GRITS) Center and has partnered with ASPRS to offer a "provisional" GIS certificate program to graduating seniors and graduate students. Certifications and accreditations are the norm for most disciplines and the GIS industry and academia too are slowly but surely moving to finalize accreditation and certification processes that will be applied to institutions graduating GIS professionals and people aspiring to be GIS professionals, respectively. This presentation will focus on the role that the GRITS initiative and the certificate program have played in attracting students to the department. In addition to discussing the partnership with ASPRS to develop and offer "provisional certification" to NCCU students, the authors would also like to communicate the leading role that the department is playing, in cooperation with ASPRS, to promote geospatial education among HBCUs and other educational institutions.
