GIS, AEC and Investment Promotion in the Coega IDZ
Track: Architecture, Engineering, and Construction
Author(s): Graham Taylor

Situated near Port Elizabeth on South Africa's Eastern Cape coast, the Coega Industrial Development Zone was initiated in 1998. The IDZ addresses the needs of manufacturers adding value to raw materials and components and producing goods bound for world markets. The IDZ includes industrial parks on 11 000 hectares of land; integration with South Africa's newest deepwater port (Ngqura); container, general cargo, and bulk terminals; customs secure areas for the assembly and manufacture of products for export; and modern ICT infrastructure. The paper reviews the use of GIS within the Coega Industrial Development Zone with a focus on integration with AEC applications. Successful integration with AEC enabled a range of GIS-based products for the promotion of the Coega IDZ to prospective investors. Products were developed with the use of a range of Esri extensions, including new generation tools for Lidar.
