NGS Support for Real-Time GNSS Networks
Track: Surveying
Author(s): William Henning

What is networked Real-Time (RT) satellite based positioning? What are the benefits of using it? This paper will address these questions and explain the envisioned role of NOAA's National Geodetic Survey (NGS) in this exploding technological field. More than 40 Real-Time Networks (RTN) are in operation in the continental U.S., providing a significant benefit-to-cost ratio in positioning technology for the public, private, and academic sectors. One major benefit of these networks is that they enable data compatibility in local, state, and regional GIS, as long as they are based upon the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) as maintained by the NGS. The ubiquity of GIS infrastructure provides tremendous applications that aid in almost every facet of our lives, if it is linked with homogenous data of reliable accuracy and the complete metadata of its components. The NGS must be involved in support of RTN, helping to add confidence in the data GIS professionals employ.
