Conservation and GIS for the Zoological Society of San Diego
Track: GIS Organization, Management, and Implementation
Author(s): Shari Buckhout, J.P. Montagne

As an accredited museum, the Zoological Society of San Diego studies, documents, and interprets many diverse collections, including conservation sensitive plants and animals. Whether on site tracking endangered Cycads, or world-wide monitoring the translocation of black rhinos in South Africa, the integration of GPS and GIS technology support our conservation efforts. We are progressing from a disassociated assortment of archaic documents and tracking practices to a truly integrated, spatially related, information system. We anticipate that our GIS endeavors will bridge the information gap across the boundaries of our many departments, ultimately connecting our conservation efforts to our patrons and organizational partners of zoological, botanical, and museum association.
