Abstract
GIS Applications to the Alaska Canada Railroad Link Feasibility Study Track: Transportation Author(s): Janak Dhungana, Paul Metz The University of Alaska Fairbanks carried out several different investigations related to a feasibility study for the extension of the Alaska Railroad to the Canadian Railroad system, including the GIS database development. The GIS database has been developed through the collection of vector data, raster data, and other types of data from different sources. The GIS database and its availability on the internet using ArcInfo and ArcIMS was extremely important aspect of project management. The project team included engineers and scientists from Alaska, Canada, and the continental USA. The GIS database also provides the framework for the further technical analysis, and detailed fieldwork and design of the proposed rail link. It will be very cost effective and convenient to update the database as additional office and field work progresses over the period of Environmental Impact Statement development, final design, and construction of the project.
