Lake Ontario Watershed Characterization Mapping
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Betsy Landre, Rebecca Schalk

New York's Lake Ontario coastal waters are a valuable resource for drinking water, recreational activities, and tourism, as well as a key asset in the economic revitalization of upstate New York. Despite significant water quality improvement in the open waters of the lake over the last three decades, 300 miles of New York's Lake Ontario shoreline and embayments are suffering from many impairments that severely limit their recreational use and affect the economic development of the region. Remediation efforts are fragmented, with projects, communities, and counties competing for attention of state and federal agencies and funding.

To supplement a document focusing on a regional strategy for research, pollution control, and remediation of the Lake Ontario nearshore area, E & E designed and built a comprehensive GIS that included land use data, detailed topography, sewer districts, critical habitats, and streambank-inventoried areas. A total of eleven in-depth maps were created and published.
