Abstract
Using GIS to Support Oceanographic Data Management and Visualization Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources Author(s): Hong Fan, Jianfei Lai, Qifeng Zhao This paper introduces the design and development of "the Xiamen Oceanographic Data Management and Display System (AODMDS)." The system is based on ArcObjects, a component-based GIS development tool. The paper discusses in detail the storage and organization of the oceanographic data, the strategy and methods for visualization and mapping of oceanographic data in AODMDS. It also discusses some advanced display control techniques which expand the functions of ArcObject. An example of such techniques is the "gradient-fill-style color-map control," which provides a feasible color-rich display control for all types of raster maps. Currently, AODMDS has been successfully deployed and running at the Forth Institute of Oceanography, China. As a stand-alone desktop GIS system built on AO, AODMDS has achieved the effective data management and powerful mapping and visualization of atmospheric and oceanography data. The performance of the system has met the requirements and goals of the ocean user community very well.
