Abstract
GIS: When Lives Are on the Line Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Shannon Deckert, Colen Wilson In 2003, the City of Killeen Fire & Emergency Response Department implemented and installed Mobile Data Terminals (MDTs) in emergency response vehicles. MDT technology is widely used in the emergency response industry to deliver 911-dispatch information to the emergency vehicles. With lives on the line, quick response is paramount. However, the network bandwidth to the vehicle did not allow for detailed map presentation to emergency response personnel. Killeen GIS staff developed professional quality map books as a backup for emergency call site location. Esri's PLTS Map Production System Atlas was acquired and used to create an SDE enhanced map book. The map books features an efficient update process, rich information, and easy-to-view map pages. This paper illustrates the processes and methodologies used in needs assessment, implementation, and final production printing of map books for emergency response personnel.
