The Use of GIS for Intra-site Spatial Analysis in Archaeology
Track: Archaeology
Author(s): Hope Kron

Spatial analysis is an integral part of archaeological research, with intra-site analyses being particularly important today. With the advent of new technology, GIS has become a popular tool for spatial analysis in archaeology and other disciplines. GIS technology has an advantage over conventional statistical models, because it is able to consider the spatial dimension of data in addition to traditional quantitative analysis. However, GIS has rarely been utilized for intra-site spatial analysis in bioarchaeology. Consequently, GIS technology has not been utilized to its full potential in bioarchaeological research. In this paper, I will address the use of ArcGIS for intra-site spatial analyses in archaeology. I will discuss which GIS tools are appropriate for such analyses and how they should be used to achieve the best results. I will then demonstrate the use of ArcGIS for intra-site archaeological research using Kellis 2, Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt as an example.
