Growing Impact of GIS in Nigeria's Petroleum Industry
Track: Petroleum
Author(s): Ogbo Ogbo, David Udoma-Michaels

Nigeria stands as Africa's leading and the world's seventh-largest oil exporter. The 150-million people country is endowed with massive oil reserves in the region of 40 billion barrels. It currently produces 2.61 million barrels per day. Massive investments have been, and are being made by multinational oil companies in joint venture (JV) and production-sharing contract (PSC) arrangements with the Nigerian Government to develop the exploration and production (EP) sector. The sheer task of managing the huge EP asset base and growing incidents of host community discontent, pipeline vandalization, illegal activities, and hostage taking has made GIS an imperative technology for both the industry operators and the government regulatory agencies. This paper will explore some GIS-related efforts at tackling the challenging Nigerian industry.
