Abstract
Emergencies, Disasters, and Security: Integrating GIS into Emergency Services Track: Disaster Management and Emergency Response Author(s): Marc Berryman Being able to quickly gather data and information from diverse and remote sources is crucial to making informed decisions during times of crisis. GIS can be used to bring large amounts of diverse data into a common operational picture. Data warehouses and remote databases can be made accessible with XML wrappers, while personnel location devices, unit status, weather conditions, traffic flow, radiological, biological, and other sensor data can be "feed" into an integrated GIS. GIS can be the tool to collect and disseminate this information in a logical and understandable fashion to those who need it most, the first responders.
