GIS Inventory, Surface Analysis, and Web GIS for Desert Garden
Track: Parks and Natural Reserves
Author(s): Gina Durizzi

The 2.5 acre Desert Garden of Balboa Park in San Diego, California includes more than 1,400 succulents and drought-resistant plants from around the world. The under-budgeted staff desires a garden level pilot project to aid in facilities management and to improve the quality of services catered to more than 500,000 park visitors each year. A Web-based GIS will provide a practical solution for the capturing, tracking, querying, reporting and display of the garden's dynamic features and their attributes. The pilot will include plant and infrastructure inventory and locations, potential locations for garden expansion, the determination of drainage flows, and a 3D perspective of the garden. Both the park staff and public can enjoy remote access to the garden features and the ability to create custom maps.
