ICON: A System for Operationally Managing Fires in NSW Australia
Track: EMS/Fire
Author(s): Stewart Hay

In July 2005 the New South Wales Rural Fire Services implemented a new operational management system. Incident Control ONline or ICON is a suite of server, Web-based, and standalone tools to support bushfire management. This system has been designed to support the use and application of spatial technology for operational staff from local incident management team, state coordinators and aviation specialists. These tools include a number of modules including web based fire mapping, standalone fire mapping application, thermal aerial scanner visualisation, state overview of incidents, visualisation of live weather and lighting strike data, and the automatic distribution of fire boundary data to support agencies. This presentation will look at the technologies used and the purpose of the tools developed with the ICON suite. It will also look at interoperability issues for sharing data between operational agencies and software systems.
