Graffiti Crime Analysis and Program Development
Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice
Author(s): Matthew Reidmiller

Due to a recent increase in graffiti, the City Council of Montclair, California has created a new police unit to reduce and eventually eliminate graffiti in the city. To assist the new police unit, a GIS will be created to analyze location and factors contributing to graffiti and coordinate graffiti removal/control. This project will create an ArcIMS application that consists of three key features. The application will give the police and the public a medium for reporting graffiti locations, it will analyze spatially and statistically the graffiti data, and display the graffiti locations via the Internet for both the police and the public to view. This project will also take into account issues such as data privacy. Ultimately, through this project, the Montclair PD will be able to increase patrol in graffiti prone areas and reduce the amount of graffiti in the city.
