Abstract
Twin Cities Unite in GIS Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Sandra Sherriff Established as the largest local government GIS (Esri site) north of the South East Queensland councils Townsville City Council has created and maintains a large number of data sets since the late 1970s. Council has had a large take up on the use of the spatial data and software to enable operational crews to perform tasks more effectively and efficiently. The main driver has been the maintenance of council assets which include water, waste water, stormwater, roads, park assets (including furniture, trees etc.), street signs, and dogs (including dangerous dogs). This data has proven its value in the form of information for council's decisions processes. Through the combination of council's specialist staff, data, Esri and Miner and Miner's software Council has positioned itself to become a regional GIS provider for the smaller surrounding Councils. This presentation will provide an insight into the business case and methodology behind becoming a local government GIS provider.
