Development of a Spatial Accessibility Model Applied to Education
Track: Education
Author(s): Diego Fernandez Chavez

Educational problems have been identified as one of the main issues affecting the development of many countries, including Peru. These problems are related, among other causes, to accessibility to education services. Having this into account, the Ministry of Education has developed a model by using Esri GIS tools to build indicators of accessibility. This model has been developed through the use of field data and spatial analysis algorithms of road networks, land uses, slope, and fluvial networks. This indicators will be used to correlate time and distances of transportation, and learning achievements. Additionally, these indicators may be linked with other development variables, such as malnutrition or poverty. This is helping to develop strategies to improve the processes of education planning and management, which, in a long term, will contribute to have better conditions of life.
