Abstract
GBIF-Switzerland: Spatial Database Design for the Geo-Web Information System Track: GIS Organization, Management, and Implementation Author(s): Mahmoud Bouzelboudjen, François Burri, Yves Gonseth The GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) has the principal objective to broadcast information freely and universally, via the Internet, relating to biodiversity. The ability to be progressively inter-operational, as well as the consideration of an array of data models and biological information, puts the GBIF initiative in the ranks of the leading information networks on global biodiversity. This IT solution of GBIF-Switzerland permit to develop tabular databases (specimens of the scientific collections of Switzerland) and spatial (biogeographical domain) accessible via Internet. The data to be published on Internet via the Swiss data node are very heterogeneous and coming from four linguistic regions. The IT solutions GBIF-Switzerland integrated a number of validation rules. This rule permits the verification and automatic correction as well as tabular and spatial data. Specialized software was developed for the project. This software is based on automatic thesaurus multi-languages and on specific spatial functionalities.
