Digital Coast: Legislative Atlas—Know Where the Law Applies
Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources
Author(s): Adam Bode

Visualizing where laws apply and which agencies have jurisdiction over specific areas and resources helps governing agencies within the region understand complex aspects of legislation and policy that govern coastal and marine resources. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Coastal Services Center, along with Photo Science, Inc., the National Sea Grant Law Center, and local partners, has developed spatial representations of federal and state legislation and jurisdictional boundaries termed "georegulations." These georegulations, accompanied by Internet mapping and Web Feature services, are available for viewing, downloading, and analysis via the Legislative Atlas Web site. The project currently covers federal georegulations and agency jurisdictions for the ocean coasts of the continental U.S. and state georegulations for the Gulf of Mexico. The atlas will soon cover federal laws for the entire U.S. and state laws in California, Hawaii, and the Northeast.
