Florida's Coastal LiDAR Data Collection
Track: Disaster Management and Emergency Response
Author(s): Richard Butgereit, Markl Wilson, Markl Wilson

In 2006, the State of Florida appropriated $29 million towards updating Regional Evacuation Studies, coastal storm surge models, and associated elevation data collection (LiDAR) to improve the State's hurricane preparedness, response, and recovery. The Florida Division of Emergency Management is administering these efforts and is collaborating with a broad group of stakeholders at the federal, state, and local level. As part of this effort, baseline LiDAR and orthophotography specifications were developed that meet the needs of stakeholders. More than 10,000 square miles of the State's coastal areas are being mapped so data management and distribution are critical to the success of this project and the terrain geodatabase is the targeted data management solution. Another interesting challenge was how to geographically distribute and prioritize mapping, balancing the needs of the various stakeholders while focusing on the needs of the project.
