GIS Technology: Empowering a Local Boy Scout Troop
Track: Education
Author(s): Albert Hill

What can a Boy Scout Troop do with GIS? Surprisingly enough, one Troop has found many uses for the technology, not the least of which is teaching its boys (and several of the adults) about the technology under the guise of having fun. Not just a GIS Day event, and not for a badge to wear on their uniform, GIS is being employed to assist in real world ways. Used in marketing and recruiting at the Troop and the local District level, the Troop also employs GIS for service delivery planning for their major fundraising activity every year. Since map reading and land navigation have always been considered fundamentals in a scout's outdoor education, GIS and GPS have proven to be natural enhancements to that skill set, even including the National Grid! From aiding in planning Troop sponsored community service activities to outings, GIS provides this group a valuable toolset.
