Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Brian Parr

Entering an organization as a new GIS manager offers a unique set of challenges due to the interdisciplinary nature of the technology. This presentation provides an uncensored look at the experiences of a first-time GIS Manager employed at a regional metropolitan planning agency by examining the successes and failures incurred during the first six months of work. What worked and what did not work in the realm of relationship building, GIS planning, and GIS project management will be explored. The presenter will also discuss data sharing within a multi-jurisdictional environment. Those who attend this presentation will gain a fresh perspective on the do's and don'ts of the new GIS manager.
