Abstract
The U.S. EPA's Geodata Gateway: Integrating Geodata into the IT Infrastructure Track: System Implementation for GIS Author(s): Michelle Torreano The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently implemented Esri's Portal Toolkit software as a foundation for building its Agency-wide geospatial portal. The goal of this effort is to improve user access to and use of the Agency's geospatial assets. EPA's implementation of the Portal Toolkit (called the GeoData Gateway [GDG]) is also being integrated with EPA's mainstream IT environment to further leverage its capabilities and improve usability. The goal of the integration effort is to create a geospatial community that leverages Portal Toolkit software functionality along with core IT systems in place at EPA (e.g., Identity and Access Management, Portal, Exchange Network) to create a seamless, integrated geospatial environment that is built upon a common framework for use across the Agency. This paper will provide an overview of the integration effort to date, including the approach, initial roadblocks, lessons learned, solutions developed, and benefits from integrating these two systems.
