ArcIMS for Sustainable Ecotourism: Pico Bonito National Park, Honduras
Track: Application Development
Author(s): Chisa Nishii

United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is one of the international organizations collaborating with the government of Honduras, municipalities, environmental NGOs, and other stakeholders to support sustainable economic growth on the North Coast of Honduras. Together, the USAID/MIRA project (Manejo Integrado de Recursos Ambientales) promotes ecotourism by generating employment within the community. This pilot project implements an ArcIMS website for the Pico Bonito National Park and Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge in Honduras, to support these goals by (a) advertising ecotourism to both domestic and international audience through distributing spatial information online; (b) promoting local community involvement through a collaborative effort in designing a central geodatabase for ecotourism management and (c) educating the general public about sustainable ecotourism through establishing a foundation of GIS analytical capabilities such as economic/environmental impact assessment. This pilot project promotes ecotourism and supports future park management goals of other National Parks in Honduras.
