Abstract
Evaluation of Drainage Master Plan Alternatives Benefit Using GIS Track: Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Author(s): Thomas Loomis, Carlos Carriaga A 25-square mile drainage area was modeled using FLO-2D, a two-dimensional (2D) hydrologic and hydraulic computer program, to identify and delineate the 100-year floodplain. The entire drainage area was translated into more than 1.1 million 25 foot by 25 foot square grid elements with attributes including topographic and resistance data, soil loss parameters, and other information needed for the modeling and analysis. Three alternatives to mitigate the drainage and flooding issues at the site were identified that include the use of detention basins, channels, and non-structural (regulatory) methods. The paper will highlight the use of GIS to facilitate the development of the FLO-2D models and to analyze, visualize and map hydraulic model results involving flood depths and peak flows. The resulting color coded maps show the areal benefits of the drainage improvements against the non-structural alternative by the reduction of floodplain area associated with significant reduction in flood depths.
