Reconstructing Campus: A Geodatabase Implementation for Map Design
Track: Cartography and Map Production
Author(s): Ken Kato, Erik Steiner

The potential benefits for creating an enterprise geodatabase for the University of Oregon to manage spatial data were obvious but would such a tool enhance our map production workflow and/or the quality of our maps? The University of Oregon InfoGraphics Lab implemented a cartographic-minded data model and re-tooled our campus data to serve both our GIS and publication needs. From a single source, we can now easily produce a range of print maps as well as a dynamic Web mapping interface (Flash) that are built directly on the foundation of the geodatabase and includes a website allowing designated editors to manager data remotely. This talk will present the key pieces of our unique integrated mapping/GIS approach and focus on how a new model has freed up time and energy, previously spent on data management, for improving the design quality and usability of our entire suite of map publications--both print and Web.
