Track: New Technology and System Integration

Reliance Energy Limited (REL), incorporated in 1929 is India's leading private sector, integrated power utility company, serving 25 million customers about 125,000 square kilometers. REL has a well-established SCADA DMS (ABB) that monitors and controls the electrical distribution network. GIS, that is primarily used for asset and facility management was interfaced with SCADA to integrate static geographic data with real-time electrical information. The GIS-SCADA Interface project involved receiving messages from each SCADA server over a WAN and processing and displaying that information in the single, integrated GIS environment accessed by both local and remote users 1,000 miles away. Several technologies were used such as Distributed COM, DAIS Bridge, OLE for Process Control (OPC) as well as multi-threading, multicasting and .NET Remoting. Implemented and coordinated across the globe, this project presented some technical and non-technical challenges that had to be overcome to provide a single window solution to REL users.
