Interfacing the OGC Sensor Observation Service with ArcSDE
Track: Water Resources

The Open Geospatial Consortium's (OGC) Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) initiative is gaining momentum as a standards based approach to sensor Web implementation. Of the specifications under the SWE initiative, the Sensor Observation Service (SOS) provides the means to insert and retrieve sensor observations from sensor networks. Currently only a handful of sensor observation service implementations exist and have limited interoperability with existing GIS tools. This paper describes the process of extending an existing open source SOS implementation to support storing and retrieving observations from an ArcSDE database using the Arc Hydro 9 time series enabled schema. Advantages to this approach include providing immediate access to the results of a sensor network in a familiar ArcGIS environment. Because there is no data preparation steps, observation results become available immediately. The ArcSDE Java API is utilized to create feature point geometries for sensors and populate the time series tables.
