Digital Cartography Project in the Survey of Israel
Track: Cartography and Map Production
Author(s): Yoav Tal

The Survey of Israel is the owner of the National GIS Database. The database consists of three divisions: topography, cadastre, and addresses. It has been two years since we initiated the Digital Cartography Project with the main goal to develop an automatic process for 1:50,000 topographic maps production based on the GIS database. The project is lead by the SOI in cooperation with another national agency. Since the beginning of the project we managed to already develop four automatic generalization modules for 1:50,000 scale: hydrology (lines and polygons), roads and streets, buildings, and bridges. All tools are based on ArcGIS and ArcObjects. We designed these modules and the future ones taking in consideration the future Esri's multi-resolution/representation-database (MRDB) philosophy as explained in white papers. In the presentation we would like to demonstrate the tools, initial products and future developments in this project.
