Evaluating ArcGIS 9.2 for Census Cartography
Track: Census and Geodemographics
Author(s): Jessica Dobrowolski

The Geography Division of the U.S. Census Bureau is responsible for creating multiple map types for internal use and external customers. These range from simple one-variable thematic maps, to reference maps containing hierarchical levels of geography and complex features. The number of maps in a series can vary from several sheets created using interactive tools, to tens of thousands of map sheets produced using batch-processing where human interaction is limited after the initial design and implementation phase. These widely ranging criteria create a challenge for finding one commercial tool that is suitable for meeting all of these requirements. This presentation will discuss our ongoing evaluation of the new functionality in ArcGIS 9.2 as it relates to the aforementioned criteria, focusing on generalization methods, the ability to batch process and automate production, and the design capability of the updated cartographic representations tools.
