Developing a Public Health Map Portal: NYC's Case Study
Track: Health and Human Services
Author(s): Christopher Goranson, Doug Williamson, Susan Resnick, Marsha Kaunitz

In June 2006 the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) and the New York City Department of Information Technology & Telecommunications (DOITT) partnered to develop the Public Health Map Portal. The goals of the project were to provide an enhanced method for retrieving facility-based information by address or ZIP Code, and provide interactive thematic mapping of public health data. Using ArcIMS software enhanced with AJAX, .NET, and Java, the Public Health Map Portal expanded on previously methods of responding to data requests, by putting the power of accessing the information directly in the public's hands. Innovative features developed by DOITT included the ability to update facility information through a Web-based administration panel, and a tool for downloading the results of the interactive maps as high-resolution thematic images. This presentation will demonstrate how public health data can be accessed and mapped interactively using the portal.
