Abstract
The Tools Needed to Build High Quality GIS Data Track: Database Design, Automation, and Management Author(s): Greg Thomas, Adam Kelly Achieving high quality GIS data is no small feat in a jurisdiction the size of Fairfax County which encompasses 399 square miles. Fairfax County's property and zoning data contains more than 3 million features and 8 million attributes. Tools for assessing the quality and accuracy of data needed to be employed. This paper will discuss the tools that Fairfax County has implemented to ensure that data is being entered correctly. One tool is used to assess the street centerline data for address range and directionality problems. This tool displays information using a graphic method. Another tool reports where attributes are inconsistent with the other geographic layers. Yet another tool has been provided to GIS users to provide input on data errors they encounter. Errors are submitted to the GIS office and then the user can see the correction status. These tools and others help Fairfax County keep GIS data accurate.
