Abstract
System Design Experience Within the New Enterprise Paradigm Track: Transportation Author(s): Curtis Pulford, Anurag Mehta Jack Dangermond once said, "The paradigm shift is from better mapping to radical business process improvements." Recent evolution in GIS technological tools has significantly eased access to GIS data and applications. This trend raises challenges at multiple levels for efficient and effective delivery of GIS: in business system design and architecture, in the balance between easy access and domain security, and in systems and services consumption. Easy accessibility to enterprise tools and the Web does not automatically lead to good system architecture. Without integration strategies and careful system design, business GIS systems can become continual maintenance problems and budgetary frustrations. Wisconsin DOT will explain how their GIS design strategies have evolved in response to this paradigm shift. Using a recently developed enterprise system as example, this presentation will focus on developing successful GIS-focused systems in a true enterprise environmenthere GIS is one amongst many players in the enterprise IT architecture.
